Jeel Scholarship Fund

Building a Better Future

Jeel Scholarship Fund
The Jeel Scholarship was established in 2020 with the aim of providing grants for further
education to Boys boarding at the Jeel al-Amal Home. Going forward as more Girls are being
cared for by the School, we also intend to help them with Scholarships. These Youngsters are
typically orphans, at risk, or coming from families who, for a multitude of reasons are unable to
care for them.
Until now, very few of them would have been able to go on to any further education purely due to
lack of funds, and when their time at The School is up their only prospects are low paid menial
work in the markets or local stores, and in extreme cases homelessness and begging!
There is a committee in place to raise funds for the JSF with Canon Michael Glanville-Smith of Ripon Deanery
as Chair, (far left of photo, accompanied by JSF Committee Members Rose and Katie and our 1st 3 Scholars), and the project has the full support of Jeel Director, Najwah Sahhar, who selects the candidates for Scholarship.
The Fund is managed by the McCabe Educational Trust and ALL monies raised go directly to the Charity….there are no Administration Fees or Salaries to be funded.
Najwah checks the suitability of prospective students: their academic ability, psychological resilience to live and thrive in an unfamiliar environment, and their determination to pursue a particular course of study with a clear goal in mind.
She liaises with the colleges and manages fee payments and student support.
In 2020 the first student began a four-year nursing degree at Al Quds University, and in 2022
the JSF committee agreed to sponsor two more boys, one on a Medicine degree at the American Palestinian University in Jenin and one studying nursing at Bethlehem University.
This is the first time such an opportunity has been available to Jeel Boys, but it isn’t cheap…...
Typical annual fees average around £3,500, and the ambition is
to be able to offer funding to all suitably able candidates.
The Committee worked incredibly hard to raise £40,000 in its
first three years to get this project off the ground, but it is an
ONGOING project.............. so, please help make a dream come
true for more Jeel school leavers…
